Abstract
Background: Although many epidemiological studies were reported that serum uric acid level was related to metabolic syndrome, there are few studies about correlation between the level of serum uric acid and the number of metabolic risk factors.

Methods: The subject of this study included 49,328 adults over 20 years old who visited health evaluation centers all over the country between January and December of 2006. We used and analyzed their information, which is height, weight, blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, WBC, creatinine and uric acid.

Results: In metabolic syndrome group, serum uric acid level was significantly higher than in non-metabolic syndrome group in both of men and women; the uric acid level was respectively 6.0¡¾1.1, 5.8¡¾1.1 and 4.7¡¾1.1, 4.2¡¾0.9. In both of men and women, prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome increased as serum uric acid level markedly increased and there was linear correlation between uric acid and some related factors that were weight, WBC, BMI, triglyceride, blood pressure, creatinine, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. From generalized logistic regression analysis between the serum uric acid level and the number of metabolic risk factors, there was strongly independent relationship between
serum uric acid level and the number of metabolic risk factors even after limiting the variables in women. But there was weakly independent relationship, even no dependent relationship after limiting the variables in men.

Conclusion: As they have higher level of serum uric acid, they have stronger possibility with metabolic risk factors. This tendency is stronger in women.
